Some of you might not be this lucky. Your first priority should be your safety. A very close second priority should be the safety of your beardie. Use the right number of people to ensure both of those! Some beardies will simply sit on your lap or the ground while you trim their nails.
This makes things easy. Bacardi sits still enough that we can set her down and then grab her little foot with one hand while trimming with the other.
If you can, though, we recommend holding your bearded dragon while trimming their nails. This allows you to keep them in one place and hopefully calm. It also allows you to isolate each leg as you trim which will help reduce the chances of either of you getting hurt. This prevents them from being able to pull away. It also prevents them from trying to nip at you. Finally, it gives you clear access to their nails. We also recommend that you do this on the ground or on a large table.
The entire nail is made of keratin. Running along the top of the nail will be a strip of pigment. There are some morphs genetically bred variants that have been bred for certain appearances and physical traits that have all clear nails, but most will have a dark stripe of pigment running down the top of the nail.
This pigment is just that, color. A good guide is to go just under halfway from the tip to the bump. The end of the nail is long and thin and taking just under half of that is a good guide. We are NOT trying to trim them down as far as possible. A lot of pet owners are used to trimming dog or cat nails where the goal is to get them nice and short.
As a last step, reward your beardie for being good! Give them a treat of some kind we like to use hornworms for this. Hopefully, this will reinforce nail trimming as a good experience and make each subsequent trim that much easier. As pet owners who have trimmed both dog and cat nails, we can tell you for sure that trimming the nails of a bearded dragon is a piece of cake compared to that.
The biggest part is handling your beardie regularly. His momma also runs a reptile rescue, averys2ndchancerescue. Not always. If you keep your lizard on an abrasive substrate like packed sand, rough tile, or flagstone, their nails get worn down naturally and you should only need to trim their nails every once in a while to keep things even. If you keep your lizard on something softer like aspen shavings, linoleum, paper towel, newspaper, or repticarpet, their nails can get long and sharp—fast!
It can. You may even let your bearded dragon listen to some relaxing music! Hopefully you know what will make your pet relaxed, and can ensure they are calm before starting.
If you find that these methods are not working, just simply try again the next day. This is essential for both your safety and theirs. You also want to make sure that your bearded dragon is comfortable being held by you.
Try and incorporate some handling time into your daily routine. This will make your pet more comfortable being held, which will make it easier when you decide to clip their nails. First decide if you are going to have someone hold your pet while you cut their nails, or if you are going to hold them yourself. This all depends on how cooperative your bearded dragon will be. This way, you can easily cut their nails, while they remain calm and stay lying down.
This may only come with time though, so make sure your pet is really calm if you decide to try this way. This is important for the safety of both you and your beardie. That being said, if they are calm and you can hold them steady while you work, this is the ideal situation.
If this is not plausible, have a friend hold them while you clip their nails. Make sure they know how to hold them correctly, never squeezing. Also, make sure to wave your hand in front of their face before picking up, so they are not surprised when handled. Be conservative with your trimming. Past the nail tip, any cutting you do should be like peeling thin layers off the nail with the clippers, not removing large chunks at a time.
This will help stop the bleeding and it also helps seal the nail to reduce the chance of infection. Be aware that some brands of styptic powder contain components like benzocaine, which may not be appropriate for reptiles, so make sure to check the package. Nicole Cosgrove. Related Posts.
